Elvin Jones Recordings Here are some of my favorite Elvin Jones recordings. Follow the links to buy them from Amazon. Puttin' it Together: The New Elvin Jones Trio - Lots of solo space. Elvin's drums sound fantastic.
John Coltrane: Coltrane - The groove on Afro Blue is incredible. The feel on Tunji is hypnotic.
John Coltrane: Ballads - No one ends a song as dramatically as Elvin.
John Coltrane: A Love Supreme - It doesn't get any deeper than this.
McCoy Tyner: The Real McCoy - Elvin's solo on Passion Dance is amazing. The slow 3/4 groove on Contemplation is classic.
Elvin! - Brush fills on Lady Luck are outstanding.
Elvin Jones: Youngblood - Seven minute solo on Ding-a-ling-a-ling make this a must have. John Coltrane: Kulu Se Mama - A long duet between Coltrane and Elvin (Vigil) make this one of the greats.
Elvin Jones: At This Point in Time - Odd meters (10/4, 9/8, etc.) with 3 saxes, electric piano, electric bass, congas, and tympani make this one of the more unusual recordings. 4 of 7 cuts were previously on The Prime Element. Live at the Lighthouse - Groove on Fancy Free
Zacharia - Silly movie starring Don Johnson but dig Elvin's sweaty drum solo.
Elvin Jones: On the Mountain - Elvin's working rhythm section from the 70's (Jan Hammer and Gene Perla). Momentum Space - The great Cecil Taylor and Dewey Redman make the absence of a bass player moot.
Sonny Sharrock: Ask the Ages - With Pharoah Sanders and Charnett Moffet. |
